The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like conventional body horror, but beneath Together resides a intense meditation about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot commences when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the country for professional reasons. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force starts to affect the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn of scares, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He dreads the idea of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they still love each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
